Description

  • This is an alumni network for present and past residents, fellows, and staff in the Department of Otolaryngology at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. It will enable us to:
    • Maintain the connections from our shared experience
    • Serve as a resource for fostering discussion and collaboration
    • Facilitate dissemination of information about departmental activities.
  • The group is only open to invited members. Membership is extended to all present and former residents, fellows, and staff.  
    • Only members will be able to view group content.
    • The group will be maintained by administration in the Otolaryngology Department.
  • This group utilizes http://www.linkedin.com/, unaffiliated business-oriented social networking site with over 60 million users worldwide.
    • The service is free, though premium memberships can be purchased for enhanced search capabilities (not necessary for the purposes of this group).
    • When you join, you create a profile that summarizes the information you would like to share about your professional expertise and accomplishments.  
    • The group serves as a means to find other members, send announcements, disseminate news, share job information and generate discussion among group members.
    • You can specify what messages you receive from this service, and how often.

Create a New LinkedIn Profile

  1. Go to www.linkedin.com

  2. Enter your name, email, and password for your new LinkedIn account under "Join LinkedIn Today" and click on "Join Now". ​​

  3. Enter your profile information (ie. company, job title, country, zip code). Click "Continue".

  4. Next, you will have the option to import your email contacts so you can create LinkedIn connections with them. You may choose to skip this step.

  5. LinkedIn will send a verification message to your email. Open your email and click on the link to confirm your address.

  6. LinkedIn will open again verifying that you confirmed the mail address. Click "Confirm".

Find and Join the Group:

  1. In the upper right-hand corner search bar, change the search from "People" to "Group", and enter "Iowa otolaryngology" into the search field.

  2. When you have found the group, "University of Iowa Otolaryngology Alumni", click on "Join this group".

  3. Choose your desired group communication settings.

  4. After your information is verified, you will receive a confirmation email. 

Using LinkedIn Group Functions

  1. Find other members

    1. From the group homepage, click on "More...", then "Members".

  2. Start and view discussions
  3. Submit a relevant news article or view articles submitted by others
  4. View and submit to the job board
  5. Join one of the sub-specialty subgroups
    1. Click on "Subgroups", then "Join this subgroup" for the subgroup you are interested in
    2. Subgroups are: FPRS, Laryngology, General Otolaryngology, Pediatric Otolaryngology, Otology/Neurotology, Rhinology, Head and Neck Surgery
    3. You may also suggest other subgroups using the link from the subgroup page
